Cálem Fine Ruby

The grapes ferment briefly after which 'Aquardente' is added. Literally this means 'fire water'. This neutral alcohol does not affect the flavour, but ensures that fermentation stops. This is because the yeast cells die when the alcohol is added. The moment of adding determines the port's flavour. Because fermentation stops, sugar remains, which is why port is often sweet and has 20% alcohol.

Ideal as an aperitif. Also perfect companion with dried and fresh red fruits & pate dishes. Also delicious with mild cheeses and desserts.

Tasting note

Deep ruby red colour. In the nose, aromas of red berries, cherries and spices. Smooth palate with lots of red fruit.

Cálem Porto

Cálem is one of the best-known port brands in Portugal. Almost every family in Portugal knows Cálem Porto, making it the best-selling port brand in Portugal. The port house was founded in 1859 by António Alves Cálem and remained in the family for four generations. Today, the port house is owned by Sogevinus SGPS, S.A. Although the national market is very important for Calem Porto, today the brand is exported to more than 30 countries worldwide. For its port wines, grapes are mainly selected from two sub-regions of the Douro, the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior.
These regions are known as the "Port Wine Cathedral" and here one finds the highest quality grapes coming from famous wine estates, called 'quintas'. The Quinta do Arnozelo, where the grapes for Calem are planted, is also located in this area. After vinification in the Douro valley, the port wines are transported to maturing cellars in Villa Nova de Gaia (Porto). These cellars have the ideal conditions for maturing the port wines in wooden barrels.
