North British 17 years 2006 - 2023 #294704 for 30th Anniversary Bresser & Timmer
This delicious old sherry cask matured Single Grain Whisky from the North British distillery has been jointly selected by Bresser & Timmer and the Vintage Malt Whisky Co. Ltd. Bottled to mark the 30th anniversary of the Bresser & Timmer company and released exclusively in the Netherlands. Bottled at cask strength, non-chilled filtered and with natural colour. For us, this was the favourite in this 30th Anniversary Series.
Tasting note
Nose
The first sniff gives sweet and rich aromas of vanilla and toffee. Giving the glass a little more time, scents of dried fruits like figs and dates emerge. Also hints of coconut and soft notes of oak, a subtle spiciness with nuances of cinnamon and nutmeg. Finally, the term freshly baked pie crust with a hint of honey is mentioned. We actually think this covers the charge very well.
Taste
The first thing twe have to mention is the mouthfeel. This whisky has a silky texture and feels full and creamy. Other flavours mentioned include butterscotch and caramel, ripe bananas and peaches. There is a distinct grain character present that provides a sweet base, complemented by layers of vanilla and a hint of chocolate. This whisky has tremendous balance and depth. ith every sip we are surprised with new flavours.
Finish
Long and warming with sweet notes of vanilla and honey that linger wonderfully long. Sustained gentle spiciness and a slight hint of citrus makes for a refreshing finish.
Overall impression
A perfectly balanced grain whisky that will please novice and seasoned whisky lovers alike. Big compliments to Bresser & Timmer for selecting this cask, this is a real Scotch.
North British Distillery
North British Distillery
Established in 1885, North British Distillery is one of Scotland's largest and oldest grain distilleries. Located in Edinburgh, on the south-west side of the city, the distillery plays a key role in producing grain whisky for some of Scotland's best-known blends, such as Johnnie Walker and Famous Grouse. Its location near abundant water sources and the port of Leith makes North British ideal for large-scale production and logistics.
The distillery was established as a partnership between several whisky producers to compete with the dominant Scotch Whisky Distillers. Today, North British is owned by Diageo and Edrington, two industry heavyweights.
North British produces high-quality grain whiskies, mostly made from corn and sometimes wheat, distilled in column stills. The whiskies are known for their light and smooth character, with subtle notes of vanilla, honey and a hint of citrus, perfect as a base for blends or in independent bottlings.
