Clutius & Clusius described how to distill mead in the book Van de Byen (About Bees), a correspondence published in 1597, during the Eighty Years' War.

Theodorus Clutius was a pharmacist, famous for his knowledge of medicinal herbs and bees. Carolus Clusius was a famous botanist and professor at Leiden University. When Clusius was appointed the very first prefect of the Hortus Botanicus Leiden, the oldest botanical garden in The Netherlands, they built the garden together.

With the introduction of sugar, we began to forget about honey and its many possibilities. Sadly this has continued, to the point where we have almost forgotten about bees entirely. It is only after a huge wake-up call that we have realized how important bees are to our continued existence on Earth.
