Mauxion Borderies Lot 36 Selected by Passion for Whisky

We proudly present a true masterpiece of Cognac Mauxion: an exceptional cognac distilled in the year than Franklin D. Roosevelt was re-elected president of the United States, 1936. As is customary in the Cognac region, this is shown on the bottle as Lot 36. This rare gem comes from the prestigious Borderies region, Cognac's smallest and most exclusive cru. After maturing for 80 years in oak, the cognac was transferred to a so-called Dame-Jeanne, of which 42 bottles were finally bottled on 20 June. After this, the Dame-Jeanne was completely empty. All bottles were bottled exclusively for Passion for Whisky, making this one of the most exclusive products in our range.

Tasting note

Colour

This very rare cognac sparkles in the glass with a deep, warm amber colour. The rich, oily tears that slide slowly along the rim of the glass testify to its extremely long ageing and exceptional quality.

Nose

The nose is a sumptuous symphony of complex aromas. On first encounter, rich notes of dried fruits, sultanas, dates and figs reveal themselves, intertwined with subtle hints of old oak and leather. As the cognac breathes, give it time, you will be rewarded, nuances of candied orange, honey and a delicate floral undertone emerge, typical of the Borderies region. A slight hint of tobacco and a touch of rancio complete the nose.

Taste

The first sip makes the corners of our mouths go way up. The decadent, silky texture fills the mouth completely. Flavours of ripe plums and juicy peaches dominate, followed by layers of toasted almonds and butterscotch. A second sip reveals a wonderful balance of spices perfectly in harmony with the sweeter notes. A subtle mineral undertone highlights the Borderies' unique terroir.

Finish

The finish is enormously long, elegant and extraordinarily refined. Lingering notes of dried fruit and oak are complemented by a delicate hint of dark chocolate and a touch of tobacco. Silky tannins make for a spectacular finish. We haven't tasted this in cognac before, but we haven't been able to taste this much 90-year-old cognac either.

Overall impression

With an ageing of over 80 years and only 42 bottles, this is a rare tasting experience and very exclusive collector's item. For the true aficionado, this cognac offers an unparalleled journey through time and taste, with each element perfectly balanced and leaving a lasting impression on the senses

Mauxion Cognac

The origins of the Mauxion family date back to 1575 when Pierre Mauxion was born in the village of Houlette. Today, after 13 generations, the estate is still home to the Mauxion family. Antoine Mauxion was the first of the family to produce eaux-de-vie in 1743 and ten generations have since followed in his footsteps. Today, the house of Mauxion Selection continues to embrace original traditions with regard to tending the vineyard and producing high-quality eaux-de-vie.

All Cognac produced by Mauxion Selection comes from the prestigious terroirs of Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies and Fins Bois. To preserve the flavour of their eaux-de-vie, Mauxion Selection Cognac is bottled at cask strength without blending or reduction, allowing the eaux-de-vie to develop with exceptional complexity and depth. While the careful selection process means quantity is limited, it guarantees a Cognac of unparalleled quality, every time.
